The 34th annual MOJA Arts Festival gets underway with vibrant fanfare with the Opening Day Street Parade on September 28th at 6 p.m. Marion Square marks the beginning of the parade route. Marching bands strike up a beat entertaining the crowds watching from the sidelines. Colorful costumed dancers, community members and performers meander down King Street on through Market Street then ending along East Street at the U.S. Custom House. 

A popular tradition with families who live in Charleston, the MOJA Arts Festival runs from Thursday, September 28th to October 8th combining a variety of events showcasing the mystique and grandeur of African American and Caribbean culture. Dance, theatre, music, arts, and more fill a full schedule. Many of events are free to attend.

Toes are tapping and rhythm in full swing on September 29th during the Reggae Block Dance. On the banks of the Ashley River at Brittlebank Park dancers twirl and sway. On the stage local reggae bands keep the music flowing. At Gadsden's Wharf, free workshops and demonstrations are presented by the Robert K. Brown Evidence, A Dance Company on October 3rd. Traditional African dance is merged with contemporary movements by the company.

Charleston Property Owners Anticipate the Parade, Dancing, and Theatre

Pulitzer Prize winning theater is performed at the Historic Dock Theatre. August Wilson’s Fences merges ten plays illustrating moments throughout the 20th Century. Other performances in October tell the tale of survival on a slave ship with When I First Remember, while Sugar In The Grits depicts a coming of age. Showtimes are available online.

The MOJA Juried Art Exhibit runs the length of the festival. Local artists come together to introduce the efforts of their talent and hardwork. Examples of painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and more line the walls at the City Gallery. Additionally shown is the impressive exhibit Dance of the Ancestors: Egungun Masquerade. Here renditions of masquerade art are on display paying tribute to a form rich in heritage and unique in culture.
